Public Freakout ... Fight ERUPTS Between Pat McAfee vs Adam Cole

I wasn't sure where to put this. I thought about starting a new thread, but I found this one. I've been known to speak fondly of Pat McAfee in the past. I even sort of defended him on this thread. I first met him when he was a 15-year-old high school football player. He could always be funny even if much of his schtick is based on being a dumbass Yinzer. Even his enabling relationship with Aaron Rodgers doesn't bug me all that much, though I have no stomach for listening to the segments when Rodgers is on his show.

After reading this story, I'm done defending the guy. There was a social media rumor going around about a college freshman. I'm not going to repeat it here. I'm not going to mention where she goes to school because I would prefer to avoid bringing more unwanted attention to this young woman. The information is there in the article I linked if you really want to go there, but it's not my point. It's an ugly rumor and there was no reason for McAfee to bring it up on the air. This was during a segment with Adam Schefter. No, there was no connection to any player expected to be taken in the upcoming NFL draft, though that is where Schefter tried to take the conversation. McAfee just wanted to lead his show with something salacious. Every one of us has met that dumbass in high school or college who can't help giggling like a child over shirt like this, but McAfee is 37 years old. The young woman is suing McAfee and ESPN. I don't care if the rumor is true or not. I hope she wins.

forking jagov is giving Yinzers a bad name.

The juxtaposition of McAfee earlier in the show talking about taking his young daughter to Disney and then doing to a young woman was a chef's kiss by the writer.

Strang also points out McAfee's history of making irresponsible, stupid comments and explaining how this is different because the woman is not a public figure.

I liked McAfee when he was playing for the Colts. Never understood the appeal of him as a media personality.

The article you linked is really well done, but it annoyed me that they never addressed the glaring problem her defamation claim will have. As the reporter mentioned, McAfee never mentioned her by name. I went and watched the segment (it was gross and Schefter definitely had a look of why the F are you talking about this) because my brain was running through the identification problem. In other reporting I'd seen a claim that he'd put her picture up, which is why I went to the source. He did not. And his comments about who was involved are vague enough, that I don't think she actually has a claim. The closest he comes to identifying her is by saying her sorority name, but unless it's a really small sorority, that's probably not enough.

I think the story is more about McAfee's idiocy hurting someone than it is on whether or not her lawsuit has much of a chance of succeeding.

Absolutely, which is why I said it was a really well done article. It just created a big question without answering it for at least one reader (me), and though my journalism days are way behind me now, that's something I was taught to try to avoid.

You have a good point. I'm just wondering if getting deeper into it would distract from the narrative.

If you pick up the phone and Katie Strang is on the line, you're forked. And, to quote Whoopi Goldberg back in the day, not in the nice way.
