My first reaction was "he was still alive?" Television game show hosts seem to have a good lifespan. Hugh Downs of Concentration fame lived to be 99. So did Bob Barker.
Wink Martindale is 90.
One of those guys who will be forever linked to the show he hosted during the heyday of 1960s game shows, much like Art Fleming and Jeopardy! (before Alex Trebek), Bob Eubanks and the Newlywed Game, Jim Lange and the Dating Game, Monty Hall of Let's Make a Deal (lived to 96!) and Gene Rayburn of the Match Game. Maybe Allen Ludden with Password, as well.
Like a lot of stuff, enough double entendres to entertain the adults while the kids had no idea what Paul Lynde and Charley Weaver were talking about.
I didn't know until today that Marshall (LaCock) took the job because he had heard Dan Rowan was being offered it. And he had a personal beef with Rowan over comedy material he felt had been stolen from Marshall's late partner. A 13-week temp gig turned into 16 years!
RIP. And circle gets the square.
