Time will tell, of course, but this looks like a good trade for the Yankees. Not sure what will come of Rutherford or Clarkin (who is age 22 and still in High-A ball), but the Yanks desperately needed a corner infield bat and their bullpen has been shirtty for a month or more.

Given Robertson's resume, if nothing else, he may push Betances and Chapman to be better. Even when they've gotten the job done, neither has seemed to pitch a clean inning since Chapman's return from injury.

Also the great named outfielder Tito Polo.

The 40-man crunch was going to hit both Polo and Clarkin this off-season, and I think both would get claimed. Polo for sure would stick as someone's 4th outfielder. The key is Rutherford. He's already a top prospect but the Yanks have so many young outfield guys that they were going to have to pick the right ones to trade. If they are wrong, it might hurt. But IF they somehow get Harper in two years, i'm not sure what they are going to do if Frazier and Judge keep doing what they are doing and Hicks is for real. Too many guys and not enough spots.

I have to admit, I hated seeing him coming into games. He wasn't *that* horrible, but still. Everything I read this morning has it broken down as a good trade for the Yankees. But this is one where you won't be able to truly score it for several years. I agree with @Della9250 Too many outfielders in the organization, and not enough spots. So maybe it makes sense. That is a damned good bullpen the Yankees will have now. If they get only 4 or 5 innings per night from their starters, that bullpen should be able to still lock down games. The starting pitching has the potential to be really iffy the rest of the way, so that appears to be the plan.

Yeah, Clippard was excellent the first two months, and then he lost it in June. He hadn't been doing that poorly for the last couple of weeks after he got some confidence back by striking a guy out with the bases loaded, but by then, the fans had lost all confidence in him.

Plus, there's also the thought that the Yankees might go all-in on getting Harper after next season, giving them an outfield of Harper, Judge and Frazier with Hicks as the fourth guy and Ellsbury as a very expensive fifth guy, so there really may not have been room for Rutherford there anyways.
