Endgame Writer Explains Why They Broke Thor's Hammer Rules For Cap's Mjolnir Scene

I'm not sure if this has been posted before. At the end of Thor: Ragnarok, Odin explains to Thor that Mjolnir was never the source of his power. It was there to help him focus his power. That is why Thor can summon lightning without it. That is then completely ignored when Captain America uses Mjolnir to summon lightning in Endgame. The latter also seems to fit better with the end of Thor, when the title character is near death or dead until the hammer comes flying back to him and his power is restored. Something similar, to a lesser extent, happens with Stormbreaker in Infinity War.

I'm sure there is a good nerdish explanation of how that might work, but that wasn't what the creators of Endgame had in mind. They just thought having Captain American summon lightning was too cool not to do it. The scene was amazing, so it's hard to argue. I guess they could have had him only use Mjolnir to bludgeon Thanos, but it wouldn't have been as impressive.

Maybe Mjolnir had residual lightning in it, from when Thor used it? It's easy enough to handwave, as you mentioned, OOP.

I think some of the commenters explained it well. Thor didn't need Mjolnir to use his powers. However, the spell on the hammer granted whoever could wield it the powers of Thor.
So Thor didn't need Mjolnir to use the lightning, but whoever else was able to use Mjolnir could also use the lightning since they had Thor's powers.

That works. I just thought it was interesting that the guys making the movie didn't bother to think about it. They just knew they had a great idea and wanted to use it in the movie, explanations be damned.
