Running Regular Season 2010 College Football Thread

NDSU doesn't have much speed or athleticism but they do have a bunch of "strong kids". Imagine 11 Jim Kleinsassers hitting people. That's Bison football.

I watched their 2006 and 2007 games at Minnesota. They lost the 2006 game 10-9 on a missed FG and won the 2007 game (doubled up the Goofers on total yardage, IIRC). Those two games, NDSU was one of the best coached teams I had EVER watched in college football. Ever.

Whatever issues they had in 2009, I can't speak about.

There's certainly no doubt NDSU was the better-coached team Saturday in Lawrence.

Is it ever OK to get rid of a coach after one game? I wonder if KU could get Mike Leach to come in a finish out the season. This isn't like losing to Appy State or Richmond. NDSU was a bad Missouri Valley team last year.

I'll throw NDSU a bit of a bone. Until last year, they were one of the better programs in the FCS, making a lightning-quick transition from Division II early in the 2000s.

Ask Minnesota how good NDSU is. They got beat by them too a few years ago. And while KU won't want to hear it, KU is to the Big 12 as Minnesota is to the Big 10 in football.

NDSU had a down year in 2009 because it had some pretty serious dissension behind the scenes. I don't know if that's been solved or not, but apparently, it was for one game.

But having said all of that, KU should not be losing to a FCS team. It's just that this particular FCS team isn't as bad as you might be making them out to be.

I will just add, do not fork with Craig Bohl. Guy's a pretty good coach.

I immediately became a believer in Craig Bohl after watching those two NDSU games at Minnesota. Agreed.

East Carolina just won 51-49 on a game-ending TD. The last 10 possessions ended in touchdowns. Freaking wow.

It should have been 52-52 going into overtime, but Tulsa coach Todd Graham is a moron and his cute 2-point after attempts early in the game didn't work. They missed on 3 of them, 2 of which they had to attempt because they bungled the first one.

Great game if you're a fan of no defense. When I'm watching CUSA teams, I enjoy the shootouts

Is it too late to go crawling back to Mangino? He lost the team in the second half of the season last year, but by God he would have never let something like this happen.

Two thoughts:
1. Is it really so surprising that cupcakes would be safe in Lawrence now that Mangino is no longer there? (Ba-zing!)

2. Good thing Turner Gill decided to take the names off of the back of the jerseys. That was Nostradamus-esque.

Didn't realize the Texas QB was Gale Gilbert's kid. Man do I feel old. But how the heck did Gale Gilbert end up in Texas? He grew up in California, never played for a Texas team in the pros.

I wondered that myself. Here's the answer:

Gale Gilbert played with former Longhorn Brian Millard in Seattle, and their friendship led him to the Austin area. The California couple settled in Texas even as Gilbert's career continued in Buffalo and San Diego.

As a result, Garrett Gilbert knew nothing but the Longhorns growing up. He went to their practices because his best friend's dad was a coach. He faithfully attended the football summer camp. When the Longhorns offered a scholarship, that trip to the Cal campus might as well have been just a vacation in the San Francisco area. It didn't even help that Kim Gilbert had been a cheerleader there.

"We tried," Gale Gilbert said. "Texas was in his blood. It was a no-brainer."

Even after Saturday's loss, I still wouldn't go crawling back to Mangino. I know some good people in the athletic department, whose job was to protect him, and he drove them away by treating everyone he crossed with a complete lack of respect. He might have recruited well, he might have won a BCS game, but the guy put a lot of people through heck for no good reason.

Re: Gill, I'll give the guy some time. Bad loss, granted, but I don't think anyone expected a bowl game from this team, not with Reesing, Briscoe and Meier gone from an offense that rolled teams the last three years. I just figured 4-8 with North Dakota State being one of those wins. Guess we might need to recalculate that.

The Big 12 is a mess. If you don't have a school bolting for another conference, or trying to, you have players trying to get a coach ousted, and/or struggling against FCS or low-major programs at home!
Is Kansas State the most sane program left?

I would never, never, ever fire a coach after one game. Don't care if it's Michigan losing to Appalachian State or Mississippi losing to Jacksonville State or whatever. heck, I would never fire a coach after one YEAR solely based on wins and loses. You commit to a person when you hire them and either you don't hire them in the first place if you have doubts or you believe in them enough to stick with them through thick and thin.

What I was saying earlier was that I did not feel Turner Gill was a good head coach... then or now. I would have chosen a different candidate. That's all.
