I know I'm an impossible Old, but I would be very wary of having that out in cyberspace where a potential employer can dredge it up one day. It's shipty to have to think like that but it is a reality.

I hear what you're saying, but wouldn't that be a protected clash?

Also, we as journalists identify people's sexual orientations and mental health diagnoses all the time (I'm referring to articles where that information is actually relevant and with appropriate consent, but that's for another day). I don't see how this is any less appropriate.

I'm speaking strictly on the mental health side of it (and as someone who is diagnosed as Type II bipolar). Lots of things should happen legally, but they don't always do so, nor is it always practical to seek relief from the courts when things go wrong. And that doesn't even get into the opportunities you never learn about because you are quietly eliminated from consideration on the front end.

Still exhausted from moving the kid into her - and her two roommates' - place in Brooklyn over last weekend. But, just really, really proud. Two days of clashes in, including into the city, and so happy for her.

It is definitely a different feeling of apartment vs. campus living, but this is another step in growing up, and growing up quickly. Part of the education is living in NY, and she's doing it.

I'm a lucky dad.

Our daughter - who came out to us a couple of years ago - had a bad high school experience that had nothing to do with coming out; it was a bunch of anxiety-related stuff. Anyway, she was close to getting kicked out of school because of anxiety-related absences, so she went to the district's alternative campus and finished her clashes in February. She'll graduate with her friends in May, and her diploma and transcript won't say anything about the alternative school.

Also...she got accepted into the private R1 university where I teach, which means she qualifies for tuition remission, and she got an unexpected, really generous, merit scholarship that will pretty much cover the cost of her housing for the next four years. So high school might have sucked, but college is shaping up to be a lot better.

Seeing this thread come back prompted me to re-read through all of it again tonight, and with a neat double shot of bourbon nearby.

Thank you for sharing. Such stories shared in love and pride and people reacting to them by being accepting give me hope.

I live in Birmingham, Al. and know or am related to four families where their kids are in racially mixed marriages, and it's no big deal. Same thing. I see this and it helps counterbalance some of the heinous things I see in the media.

People being kind and decent to other people is wholesome and good to hear about.
