The Economy

One month ago, the pound was worth 1.24 USD. Today it's 1.29. Thanks orange forkface.

OMG. This is my sister-in-law, who is becoming a pioneer woman. She has 4 looms and several spinning wheels. She has taken over her living room and a bedroom with weaving stuff. Every visit, here or there, includes a stop at a fabric store. She buys freshly shorn wool and picks out the bad stuff so she can make her own yarn. Fortunately, she is quite good at making stuff.

My wife dreamed of making linen out of flax, built a flax break herself, and we planted flax in the backyard.

Unfortunately, things always fell apart in the "retting" process, and the flax became too brittle to separate the fibers.

So what, if anything, does the market have to do in one day to spread panic? We never really know when Black Monday is until the bell closes.

I always have to remind myself that 800 points aren't the same as in 2009, when these numbers were like one-sixth of everyone's portfolio.

She must be lamenting -- even dreading -- the upcoming closures the Joann stores.

Pioneer Woman grew up in the upper middle class and then married into the family that owns the most land in Oklahoma.
