The Oil Train and other sounds of happiness

We live about three miles from an active train line. Early in the morning, before most of the city is up and going, I can faintly hear the horns. Love it.

Also, the sound of a free wheel hub on a road bike makes me happy.

Slacker mentioned the rumble of the press at work, and having worked so many late-night desk shifts, it was a comforting sound to hear coming from next door or the basement. "Another daily miracle."

I always think of this whenever the deadline clock is ticking:

Geese. Where I live is apparently the I-95 for birds migrating north to south. So during the evenings when the weather begins warming up during this time of year I'll hear them squawking as they fly north for the summer months. It's a nice reminder that summer is on its way. Conversely, I always getting a little sad when I hear them heading in the opposite direction in early October.

The ribbits of frogs.

After we get some good rain and the washes and creeks get s as little water, they strike up the orchestra. Very soothing. I don't get it so much where I'm currently living, but the house I grew up in about 10 miles up the road would get so many frogs.

And I'll second the sound of cars on a highway or similar road. It can't be a true residential street but somewhere you get a good Doppler effect with larger vehicles. It's really hard to explain what it sounds like or why it's relaxing but a year ago I was in Pennsylvania at a place apart from other houses on a moderately busy side road not far from a high school. Sitting in the house in the afternoon just taking it easy with no TV or other sounds it was very nice.
Also, peepers in the spring!

People like geese? They are filthy, disgusting creatures.

Not a sound but a sight:
I love to watch geese land on a pond. The lead goose will bring the rest in on approach, they set their flaps, put their landing gear down, and bring it home. Sometimes, the lead goose will even wave off the landing and bring the whole group around again. The synchronization of it all just captivates me.

Mean little Baskets, too. And stupid.

Nevertheless ...
