The Soccer thread (Part II)

73k tickets sold for the US-Argie match tomorrow. I have a ticket in Sec. 101, but I think that a nearly full term Mrs. W and a lack of a baby sitter to watch toddler W is going to make me a no show.

Iraq continues to own Australia. Beat them 1-0 in World Cup qualifying.

Ends up 0-0. Adu came on in the second half, and by the end was taking some severe punishment from the Argentinians for having the audacity to run past them.

Both sides ended with 10 men, Mastroiani and Mascherano both got sent off.

What did Pablo do to get sent off? It looked like the referee forked that one up.

Great second half by the Yanks. Landon Donovan and Freddy Adu played well together.

After seeing these last three games, if the Americans can't beat Barbados by six goals, I'll be disappointed.

From my seat in the upper deck behind one of the goals:

-Landon Donovan continues to be a step behind against the best teams. Too often, he waited for the ball to come to him, and was knocked off by a defender. In MLS, you can wait.

-Freddy Adu had some real nice moments. The usual Adu surfaced a couple times, with dribbling into triple teams and losing the ball. But he played much better than I expected n limited time.

- Pablo Mastroeni, like Michael Bradley, is an effective holding mid, and a yellow card waiting to happen. When he got his first yellow, Bradley should have subbed him out immediately. I guess since Edu had already come in for Bradley, they were fresh out of holding mids. They didn't say what the second yellow was for. If it was for dissent arguing the call against Edu, how does he not have the presence of mind to shut his mouth?

- The game report at ussoccer.com said "Warm, 85 degrees." No, it was "Humid and hot as all frackin' heck, 85 degrees."

Overall, thought the US gave a good account of themselves tonight. Howard was excellent, aside from a distribution issue or two. Donovan had some horrendous pases, and looked lost for much of the first half. Did more in the second, some nice moves with Adu, as has been said.

I expect they'll dominate Barbados.

On another note, I've been attending and covering US soccer games for about 15 years now. And while the low point was the heyday of "Goals! Goals! Goals!" I continue to be unimpressed by the US' wholly unsophisticated fans. The Argentines had moved way past simply chanting "Argentina!" and onto their fourth song while US fans in the so-called US section could still only muster "USA! USA!" and chants of Tim Howard's name when he did something good.

They even pulled out the old college chants of "bullshirt" after referees' calls, and "overrated" at the end of the game. These are the people who think Taylor Twellman is good, or that Freddy Adu remains a major part of the team's future.

As my first US game in the stands in nearly three years, I found the fans to be boring and uninspired. "We can chant names!"

Blech.

I've read just about every account I can find of the match and no journalist seems to have taken an interest in the fact Pablo Mastroeni was red-carded for no apparent reason. Has anyone seen a legitimate exploration of this in print?

I think that the ref got the uniform number wrong on Edu's yellow card. They don't exactly look like twins, but that's the only thing which I saw. Pablo did say something to the ref after the call on Edu, but it looked like the ref flashed only one yellow.

The tackle by Mascherano on Landycakes was awful. That was a legbreaker.

100 caps.
Two MLS cups.
All-time leading US goal scorer.
Any chance we can get the term "Landycakes" banned from this site.
The boobs who made it popular do the worst radio show in America.
