The Soccer Thread (Version 15) — I Got 115 Problems But a Pep Ain’t One

Watford snag three points to close my trip. Bloody cold out there tonight but had a blast. Homeward tomorrow.

Pro-rel will work in the U.S. as long as each tier is seen as more or less near-equal. The Little 14 and the top of the Championship are largely perceived that way in the EPL. It helps that there are a large number of clubs that have been on either side of the divide over the last 15 years and going beyond that.

Our local USL1 team:

Fuck around: Let's throw a bunch of academy teenagers out there for a home U.S. Open cup match and save our best players for the league match on Saturday. What could go wrong?

Find out: Lost 3-1 to a goddamn semipro team that plays at a high school stadium in Falls Church.

Nice way to celebrate the 30-year anniversary of the club's only U.S. Open Cup win.

The only time I witnessed a US Open Cup match was totally random, but is considered one of the great upsets in the competition.

Went to Oregon for a baseball regional, but flew into Portland. Got there early enough to go to the Timbers Cup match against immortal Cal FC, a fifth-tier club.

The Timbers also fucked around and also found out. Scoreless regulation, including a missed penalty that was so bad it literally skied over my head behind the goal. Cal FC got a goal in extra time and it held up.

Pretty sure the Timbers coach was fired soon after. (Looked it up, it was about a month later.) I didn't know it at the time, but Cal FC's coach was Erin Wynalda, who I liked as a player, but who is a douche otherwise.

Cool stadium though. Saw it in its pre-renovation phase.
