Ugly fan encounter at Eagles-Packers game

I remember in 1990 a Steelers fan got beaten pretty bad (kicked in the head, etc.) at a Steelers-Raiders game at the Coliseum. Yup, Raiders fans.

Yup. That one was bad. If I remember correctly, the guy was beaten unconscious and ended up with brain damage.

I'm as die hard as it gets with the Caps, but I've been essentially priced out of games, and I'm not poor. Tickets are more expensive this year because a) the Ovi chase and b) uh, first place in the whole damn league. Let's pick a random Saturday game ... how about 2/1 against Winnipeg. It's $100+ just to get into the building for a single, and that's at the top of the arena. You want a decent view down low? You're shelling out $200 minimum, probably $250 or more. Then I have to drive from Richmond up to D.C., which can take anywhere between 2-5 hours depending on how cranky I-95 is that day. There's no way you can take the train back after the game, last Amtrak south leaves just after 7 p.m. So if you take the train, you have to get a hotel room, which is not cheap in Chinatown. So drive it is. Parking is $10-20 for a lot five blocks away. Then you need food, drinks, etc. Basically, you'd leave at no later than 3 p.m. to be safe, spend $100 on a ticket, $40 on gas, $15 on parking, (conservatively) $60 on food and drink at the game, beers are $15 a pop for Bud Light. It's a $250 night, bare bones, with no other concessions purchases to see three hours of regular-season hockey, and then you head right back down 95 to get home. No thanks. I'll stick with Joe B and Alan May* on my setup at home or at my local.

Sure, it's cheaper on weekdays, but that's a tall ask with work involved.

Meanwhile, I looked at StubHub for Wizards-Trailblazers in February and the get in price is.....$3. My team is complete toilet water (I honestly can't tell if this team is tanking or not. I also can't tell in Chauncey Billups knows there is a game going on) and I may go just because the price is so stupid.

I see some rando in a Joey Harrington or Marcus Mariota or Herbert jersey at every single Microville Tech football game I go to. Just scratch my head and think,
"WTF dude, are you stupid?" All the dude in the Harrington jersey has done is set himself up for "Joey 5picks" catcalls all game long.

Occasionally I'll see some dudes in UO baseball hats at Microville Tech games, even if UO happens to be home that day. Makes no sense to me.

I haven't been to a game at Autzen or PK Park or the TTATT in years but I would never even dream of wearing Beaver gear at a UO home event not involving OSU. It's just stupid.

Be a forking man, put on a Tom Wilson jersey, take the train to New York, attend Islanders-Caps for almost nothing in April--twice in a nine-day span! I probably won't beat your ass. :D

But seriously, Ovechkin will have the record by then and the Islanders' lineup will be loaded with guys from the worst AHL team on the planet. They might pay you to walk in. And even if they don't, Islanders fans will be too busy chanting FIRE LOU to care you're wearing a punkass Wilson jersey.

I have a couple of nice orange polo shirts --- which I might wear to a bowl game but never at The Swamp --- but this 63-year-old's days of wearing his Heath Shuler jersey are long in the past.

Because it was Heath Shuler, that was also the case at 33, 43 and 53 too, right?

1990? They were still in LA then. But even covering the Raiders during the second Oakland era was an adventure. The last time I went, in the late 90s, I remember I had the 49ers game on the radio driving to Oakland, but once I got inside the parking lot, I rolled the windows all the way up for safety's sake.

Sorry, should have clarified, the L.A. Coliseum. I'm from SoCal and it's the Coliseum to me.

I'm calling Child Protective Services.

It befuddles me too. I think it befuddles her at times.

When she was very young, she didn't want to root for Dad's team. She wanted to pick a team that she could basically talk shirt to me about, and by then, I had indoctrinated her already to not pick the Cubs or Cardinals.

I hail her independent streak to not follow along with her Dad. I just question her judgment about the team she picked! Those 2013-15 days were glorious with a LOT of pain besides. Of course, who knew the Brewers would become a consistent winner too? That hasn't made her life any easier, especially now that she's older and can take more shirt for it.

I will say? I have done as many road trips following her team as my own. She has seen her hero, Andrew McCutchen, do some heroic things for multiple teams, including against my Brewers. (She also got to see me me act like a dope and root for Cutch in a slightly over-the-top fashion at PNC Park when he came to the plate in the ninth inning of a close game in his one season as a Brewer. Not appreciated by her, nor the Yinzers nearby.) Through her, I have a big soft spot for Cutch too ... even though he wasn't very good in a Milwaukee uniform.

It's made for some fun adventures. I have zero regrets for her. When the Pirates do get their shirt together, it will be that much more special for her.

This is how my son came to follow LSU as a kid.

Christ man even @outofplace wouldn't let his child root for the Pirates!
