All-purpose, running Tim Tebow sucks/is a deity thread!

I had this debate with some co-workers the other day. If Tebow was any other religion doing what he did people would hate him. If Abdul-Rauf kneeled and faced Mecca every time he hit a three-pointer how would he have been received?

Would probably effect his ability to get back on defense. I assume fans would be pissed if it led to uncontested points at the other end.

Starman wouldn't know what to do with himself at that point. On the one hand, he could use it to lash out at those who are scared of the Moo-slems. On the other hand, the only way the team could accommodate him would be to play a four corners offense and a slow-down zone, thus Playing the Right Way and pissing him off to no end.

Well played.

Yep. Excellent. And YF's contribution as well.

The controversy of the anthem protest was not about being Muslim. It was about his actions toward the American flag. That does kind of get people riled up. I can live with it myself, but that's a pretty non-religious hot button. Carlos Delgado got in hot water for it too and it didn't have a thing to do with religion, in fact he's probably Catholic.

That's a ridiculous comparison to Tebow praising God.

Yeah, I barely even remembered it. I did remember Delgado.

Not sure how it's comparable either.

Sarcasm aside, I am curious how you would feel if he did that at the end of a game? What if he, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Kareem all prayed together?

Anyone who said anything against that would be shouted down by half of America as being intolerant.

AGAIN: It's how I feel about ANYONE who shoves religion down my throat. You can look it up, as the saying goes. I have been utterly consistent with this, and open about it. Proving how statistically unlikely it is Tebow will keep this pace up and getting his rabid fans into a frothy rage is just a bonus.

The problem with Tebow is he IS more in our face about it than just about anyone, which is compounded by the natural tendency of NFL rightsholders to publicize him well beyond the point of oversaturation. I am also annoyed by the hypocrisy of the fans who would scream bloody murder if he was, say, not standing for the pledge of allegiance b/c of religious beliefs. How'd that work out for Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf?

I don't like religion. Period. It's a crock of shirt and I am offended when anyone who chooses to believe in this fairy tale refuses to keep it to him/herself. That's how I feel, and I am more than happy to continue this discussion with anyone who wants to do so. I have yet to sway anyone to my side of the debate, but the next person who thinks I'm a bigot after the discussion will be the first.

Well said.

Yes. He very clearly enunciated anti-religious bigotry.

The "he must be a bigot if he doesn't agree with me" defense. Thought you were better than that. Oh well.

And the flippancy with which you responded to the Abdul-Rauf hypothetical says it all.

He gave the hypothetical the response it deserved.

And why would one say anything against that in the first place? I don't think Tebow's act of praying is a true source of outrage. I think it's a backlash that has existed for six years, ever since Tebow got all the attention at Florida despite Chris Leak leading the Gators to the title. Same reason Steve Garvey and Anita Bryant faced backlash. Purity and schmaltz and gee-whiz are not good things when pushed, and that has nothing to do with religion.

There was nothing hypothetical about it.

When Abdur-Rahim was at Cal there was tons of news coverage about an afternoon game he played during Ramadan and how he couldn't eat for hours before, during or after it. Wasn't controversial at all.

Exactly. And the kids in Dearborn, MI get lots of favorable press for their night time football practices during Ramadan.

Tebow is religious, and he's forthright about it. So what?

There is a difference between being forthright and shoving it out there at every single opportunity. I'm not sure why that is so hard for you to understand.

You are way out of line calling BYH's point of view bigotry. Of course, I've had the conversation with him about why he feels the way he does. I don't fully agree with him, either, but I get where he is coming from.

Signs that the world really is going to end?

(Any time. I know where you are coming from. I know why. Also there is plenty of genuine bigotry in the world. I'm sick of these "Christianity is under attack!" whiners cheapening the real thing with this bullshirt.)

In the previous 18 years of ESPN Sales & Marketing's monthly poll of America's favorite athletes, only 10 people have finished #1.

Guess who's the 11th.

Are you saying of all the bigotry that's out there, none is directed at Christians, or that you just don't care about it?
