College Football Week Zero Thread: Give Ireland Back to the Irish

Curious of the position because it seems like quarterbacks, offensive tackles and defensive linemen are the ones really raking in the NIL money fresh out of high school.

He was a defensive lineman. And the coach indicated there was a bit of a bidding war for him for strategic reasons beyond his skill. But still, any incoming freshman getting that kind of offer is eye-popping.

Week 0 is such because you are not allowed to play an FBS game baring special circumstances (most commonly an overseas game or playing at Hawaii sometime during the season). Thus the official opening weekend for all is deemed Week 1.

Or even fly out of Philly or BWI? I have a sinking feeling they were trying to squeeze the last penny because they really have no business making this trip.

I hate the phrase "Week 0" almost as much as "running downhill" and "physicality."

It makes more sense than trying to explain why only about a dozen teams are playing in Week 1 and 100+ other teams have their first game in Week 2. It's good shorthand.
Our state's private school association has a similar deal. There were about 20 games last week and everybody else starts this week. Meanwhile, the public schools have preseason scrimmages this week and their openers next week. I jokingly called the public school scrimmages Week minus-1 in a preview story.

Yeah that's still a little on the high side for a defensive lineman, who usually need a good year to upgrade into another Tier of NIL. But a blue-chip QB or OT ou of HS...$400K is pretty cheap actually.

I think in a couple of years this will become the true Week 1 so the first round of the CFP doesn't go against the NFL on that Saturday like it will this year and next.

Conference championship games on Thanksgiving weekend. First playoff games the second weekend of December. NFL can't televise games on Fridays and Saturdays until the third weekend in December.
