Happy New Year!

I went to Times Square once, when I was a kid (maybe 10 to 12ish). My enduring memory is of my dad yelling at me and my brothers to stay close to him, and my grandfather yelling at all the drunk people.

Chicken Tenders for dinner before a Ducks-Oilers hockey game. Typical mismatch of a good team playing well and a bad team playing bad. Sent out a few MESSENGER posts wishing faraway friends a Happy New Year. Bed just after midnight, which is normal for me. Nothing special. However, we leave Wednesday for a 2-week Panama Canal cruise, and Friday is my 72nd birthday. Life is good in the midst of my 10th year of retirement after a 44-year newspaper career.

I've been through the Panama Canal a couple of times on Uncle Sam's dime. Enjoy the views.

My brother also went through twice when he was in the Navy. He highly recommends.
I've always been intrigued by the Panama Canal, but never pursued it because I didn't give a darn about the other stops. I'm not in to ancient ruins or old stone churches. But this trip came up with my in-laws so we booked it. The canal and the cruise ship themselves will make it worthwhile. And, one of the stops is in Costa Rica. I think there are more surfers in Costa Rica than in Malibu. I dig the surf vibe.

Not to complain too loudly after a year when eight people left our newsroom and were not replaced, but I worked from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. cranking out two days worth of newspaper pages. Two people were working in the entire three-story building which has dozens of abandoned work stations, an empty press facility and deteriorating infrastructure.

Maybe 2024 will finally be the end of my 30-year newspaper career — whether it's my choice or the doors of the building are locked for good.

Happy New Year! The shank end of 2022 was a sunless blur of hospital stays. Got home on 12/31 and meant to see in 2023. I think I slept from 6pm to about eight the next morning. The year turned out to be my time to learn about trust, expectations, and what I need to value and what I need to release.

I made dim sum, rangoon, egg rolls with hot and sour soup for NYE supper. There will be black-eyed-peas, farrow pilaf, hoecakes and collards today. My kitchen goal for the week is to learn to make pita bread.

I've also learned that my f***s to give have not replenished. This might be a good thing. I shouldn't be expected to go quietly into anything.

Lost one of my coworkers yesterday.

Processing it.

Hell of a laugh and sense of humor.

If he had lasted until today, he could have marked his timecard as a holiday.
