I thought Streep's smoking of dope was not believable.
Why? Seriously.
Do you mean she wasn't believable or the scene rang false?
Unless it's done the right way, capturing people getting high rings false. Them standing there talking kooky and goofy and getting giggly behind the bush didn't do anything for me. I would've rather they done the scene more serious.
The process of passing a joint back and forth is a cool, spiritual experience, and here you have two middle-aged people making that process look faux. Each of them admitted to being puffers back in the day, and even if you're rusty, you never forget how to smoke a joint.
As for the director in me ... I was thinking that cool camera work mixed with a healthy dose of post-production digital work could've shown them in the first 90 seconds of "getting high" with blurrying eyes and stuttering words and the dizziness and euphoria of it all.
I don't know. You just have these two distinguished people like Streep and Martin, and you have them act like Harold and Kumar. Didn't look, taste or feel right.
Also, Baldwin gave Streep that fattie. I wanted to see a quiet, reserved scene between them as they passed the J. The scene I envision is each one taking a big ol' drag and the exhaling smoke serving as a fade to white/reminiscence of getting stoned with the other during their happier days.
All of that said, the part when Streep and Martin are 420 and standing in the party giggling and spot the hawkish Baldwin on the other side of the room before he approaches them is decent.
