The process of passing a joint back and forth is a cool, spiritual experience, and here you have two middle-aged people making that process look faux.

WFW, and I don't think this is something film has ever gotten totally right.

Yep. The only time I've seen the stoner thing done decently was on an episode of That '70s Show, when they were eating pot brownies on accident at the dinner table and then everyone ascended into stonedom. IIRC, the camera panned around the table as everyone "acted" stoned, which I thought was nice cinematic technique. You almost felt stoned with them.

There's a scene in Jackie Brown when after they burn, DeNiro wanders over to a photo and studies it for longer than such a picture should be studied. Bridget Fonda walks over and tries to explain that it was taken during a visit to Japan or something or other. Then all of a sudden loses her train of thought and says, "Wanna fork?" and he shrugs kind of half-heartedly and says, "OK." I can very easily buy that.

Inglorious Basterds. Enjoyed it. Didn't think it was great. Thought it could have been a little shorter.

I saw the movie "TAKEN" before but forgot how forking great that movie is until I watched it again today.

I love the fact that Liam Neeson just goes around and kicks the shirt out of everyone and doesn't bullshirt.

Love, love this movie.

Watched Bruno. Yeah. I saw a lot of, uh, male anatomy. A lot of close-up shots. Jesus. That being said, I did laugh my ass off during the focus group scene.

Just came on to post that I just watched this one. Eh. I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. Definitely thought it was too long. I thought there'd be more of the Basterds' shenanigans. I found the Samuel L. Jackson narration jarring and distracting.

Mitch Hedberg (hi, IJAG!): "I was in a movie once where I had to smoke fake pot with Peter Frampton. As opposed to smoking real pot with a guy who looks like Peter Frampton. I've done that way more."

I thought Streep's smoking of dope was not believable.

Why? Seriously.

Do you mean she wasn't believable or the scene rang false?

Unless it's done the right way, capturing people getting high rings false. Them standing there talking kooky and goofy and getting giggly behind the bush didn't do anything for me. I would've rather they done the scene more serious.

The process of passing a joint back and forth is a cool, spiritual experience, and here you have two middle-aged people making that process look faux. Each of them admitted to being puffers back in the day, and even if you're rusty, you never forget how to smoke a joint.

As for the director in me ... I was thinking that cool camera work mixed with a healthy dose of post-production digital work could've shown them in the first 90 seconds of "getting high" with blurrying eyes and stuttering words and the dizziness and euphoria of it all.

I don't know. You just have these two distinguished people like Streep and Martin, and you have them act like Harold and Kumar. Didn't look, taste or feel right.

Also, Baldwin gave Streep that fattie. I wanted to see a quiet, reserved scene between them as they passed the J. The scene I envision is each one taking a big ol' drag and the exhaling smoke serving as a fade to white/reminiscence of getting stoned with the other during their happier days.

All of that said, the part when Streep and Martin are 420 and standing in the party giggling and spot the hawkish Baldwin on the other side of the room before he approaches them is decent.

I noticed that part, too. That party scene did what it was supposed to do, bringing things to a head. I thought Streep and Martin being goofy together was kind of the point, to give Baldwin one more thing to be jealous about.
