Mother won't let school deny her son his soccer scholarship

California teams could be that way just because some are so big, teams have to make cuts, but most common are seniors who must go to varsity.
 
I don't like when juniors aren't allowed to compete at the JV level (although understand it when you're talking really large schools), because I've seen some end up having fantastic senior seasons at the varsity level. And they tend to become coach favorites because they stuck it out. You're probably not going to have an ego issue from a player who was willing to play JV until their senior year.
 
I'd be embarrassed to show my face if my mom did this. But perhaps there's no such thing as shame anymore.
