i'd be curious to know whether the collective thinks this move signals anything in terms of propublica's interest in sports topics? (or anything else for that matter.) sexton's background is rather impressive and diverse, so on paper i'd say no, not necessarily. but from a non-profit business development perspective, sports seems like an opportunity for PP to extend brand penetration and perhaps donor base.

was sexton involved in any of the somewhat recent horse racing investigative pieces for the nyt? the piece about quarter-horse racing's ties to mexican cartels was insane.

I would put the columns back into regular rotation. Start with 2- 3 younger columnist that The Times could build up and develop loyal following. I think that it was a mistake to de-emphasis columns.

It's the best sports section in the country -- by far.
