Op-Ed Sections, Threat or Menace?

"hard left"

There hasn't been a politically significant "hard left" in this country since the days of the Palmer Raids.

What there has been is the fear of a hard left. Stoked by plutocrats from Carnegie and Morgan to Musk and Thiel since the late 19th century, and amplified by the red, white and blue bedwetters and grifters from Coughlin to Winchell to Limbaugh to Clay Travis, our paranoid style of conservative politics goes on and on.

Our newspapers reflect this.

My European friends are fond of saying that the biggest oxymoron in the English language is "American liberal."

Newspaper owners of all stripes and corporate ownership structures have succeeded in turning their platforms into just another consumer good. So don't be surprised when consumers make a calculated decision to stop buying the product.

Imagine Frosted Flakes losing 10 percent of its buyers in a week and somebody whining those people don't value tasty cereal or the hard-working folks on the assembly line in Battle Creek.
