Lots of good points about the form and popularity of high school gamers here ... allow me to add a few more.
1. Jay Farrar is right about Saturday papers; just look at the page count and you'll see how unpopular they are. People who have 9-to-5, M-F jobs are busier on Saturdays than on Sundays, and don't have much if any time in the morning to spend with the paper. That being said ...
2. Parents, grandparents and neighbors who know kids on the football team (or families with kids on the team) are a large percentage of whomever IS reading the Saturday morning paper, either online or in print. So the ideal gamer for them should be a mix of storytelling, quotes, a few details about why the game was won/lost, and a box score.
3. Enjoy covering/filing/reading high school sports stories while we can. As AAU/travel sports begin to eclipse prep sports, and as communities across the country become more and more transient, the popularity and need for high school sports will continue to decline. Whatever newspapers are still printing in 10 years will devote less space to prep sports than they do today.
