Pissed off coaches

County high school girls tennis tournament. I had stopped by a quarterfinal match one of her players was in because her mom had the hots for me.

My only advice would be, don't continue the argument. It's one you'll never win. Their minds are already made up. Just smile and nod. Remember, they need you more than you need them.

coaches own you, don't they?

I haven't had a pissed off coach yet but I've got a snippy one on my hands now. about a year ago, local private school wins state championship with players who had formerly played for public high school.

private school was very talented, had a dedicated young coach and, in the final, defeated a team with several Div. I signees. it was private school's 2nd consecutive title and fourth in 6 years.

because private school will not be scheduled by 3 public schools in country, the constant question I heard was, "Could private school beat any of the county public schools?"

So, I wrote a column, that was meant to highlight private school's true excellence and not denigrate the public schools. but my lede had to do with my opinion that private school would beat the public schools as a way of quickly relating to my audience that private school was that good.

I also like to periodically bang the drum that it's dumb for public schools to not play private schools in a county with less than 80K residents.

ever since then, one public school coach barely acknowledges me whereas before he was always inviting and friendly. I've heard from other coaches at the school that he was displeased with the column, mainly because he has a grudge against private school for taking "his" players.

therefore, I'm bracing for it to come out when I sit down with him for the first postgame interview of basketball season in a few weeks.

bracing for what?

is he going to bend you over his knee? is he going to arrest you? tell you there ain't no santa?

jesus man, he's a high-forking school coach. tell him to blow you and that he's lucky you don't give him a white dragon in the process.

and a great moment in SportsJournalists.com history makes a return appearance.

I would have called the athletic director on Monday.

Coaches are supposed to be role models and if he swore at you in a public place, the AD should know.

No help from the AD, call the principal?

We have been down this road a number of times.

And besides, assistant coaches have no business talking to the press anyway.

Tried that route but the AD was of no help. It was the coach's word against mine and the AD believed the coach. Oh forking well. In a week, I'm done with this city.

And TomPetty, thanks for the comments.

I'm gonna guess that you just play a tough guy on the internet.

I doubt I'm wrong.

in real life, it's usually just spineless little bastards who lose sleep worrying about those types of things.

That wouldn't be me. I'm not the typical desk dweeb who hides behind an internet persona.

On the other hand, a snippy coach is never something to look forward to and of course nobody really tells "him to blow you and that he's lucky you don't give him a white dragon in the process."

So you've got shirt coming out of your ears here, Petty. how are you going to play it?
