Running 2023-24 Hot Stove Thread

There is also some talk that he might not even be the first pitcher called up from the minors during the season. That might be Jared Jones. To be fair, MLB.com has Jones as the No. 62 prospect in baseball. They have Skenes No. 3, behind only Jackson Holliday and Jackson Chourio. Langford is sixth and Crews is seventh, just ahead of 17-year-old catcher Ethan Salas, who finished last season at Clash AA. Watch the kid who isn't old enough to vote beat all three of them to the bigs.

I didn't realize the Pirates only had to keep Skenes in the minors for half of April to deny him a year of service time. Even if he comes up in late April, I'm not sure how much he will pitch in the majors this season. They are going to limit his innings, as pretty much every team does with young pitchers, and they are going to burn some of those innings in the minors.

And then he's gonna get hurt anyway.

That was my argument against taking Skenes first overall when it happened. He and Crews seemed to be comparable prospects. In a situation like that, I would always take the hitter because pitchers are more likely to get hurt.

Oddly enough, a day after saying Skenes is headed to the minors, Derek Shelton said that rookie Jared Jones is still in competition for a spot in the rotation.

Well, he slots in just about where I think he belongs in a contender's rotation: No. 3. Darvish, Musgrove, Cease.

AJ Preller is something else. On one hand, mad props for continuing to go for it. On the other...I don't see a path for them and isn't the new ownership going to cut costs at some point? Oh well, won't be his problem.
