Running NHL 2023-24 regular season thread

We may have seen Nicklas Backstrom's last game. The hip hasn't responded as it should. Would have been incredible for Ovechkin's record-breaking goal to come from a Backstrom assist, but that was pretty unrealistic anyway.

Ugh. An all-time great Cap, of course. But when I saw him in person last year he no longer looked like an NHL-level skater.

Senators lose a first round pick for failing to disclose a no trade list to Vegas in the Dadanov trade. People may remember the Knights tried to trade him to the Ducks and it didn't go through.

New owner can't be pleased, I suspect Pierre Dorion is out as GM within the week.

Punished more than the Blackhawk's for covering up sexual assault. This forking league.

Yup. But that doesn't mean this punishment isn't fair. It messed up Vegas' playoff arrangements (to quote Tessie) when the Dadanov trade was undone and I'm sure they were pissed.

The Chicago punishment was always a joke, and who knows what the political machinations were. There may have been threats about what else would be revealed, or the league was just favouring a darling franchise, or both.

Chicago is a bad precedent and should be ignored. If another similar scandal arose, I wouldn't want the next offending franchise to get off so easily.

Which reminds me, wtf is going on with the 2018 Canada Juniors investigation?

Didn't even last the day

In case you needed any more confirmation it would be a long season in San José: After a three-day layoff, a 10-1 loss at home to Vancouver to remain winless on the season.

At some point you have to have enough pride in what you do to play hard enough to avoid giving up 10 goals. These guys are an embarrassment.

I've watched Vancouver closely for the last couple of years and they had been stealthily improving but now with Tocchet as their coach they will be a force to be reckoned with. It's all about management of the assets you have and he has some good ones. Plus, they now know they can beat anyone….it's a real team.
