SNL's Continued Downward Spiral Thread

Simon and Sir Paul both sounded very, very old on Sunday night. I saw McCartney had done a series of pop-up barroom gigs in NYC the week before the show. So maybe he'd blown his voice out in the lead up?

So I see this morning that Paul Simon is using that SNL appearance to launch a new, extensive US tour.

I don't get it. That version of "Homeword Bound" was depressing. He can't sing anymore. His voice is entirely gone.

I'm still mad about the lyric change of "cigarettes and magazines" to "airport lounges and magazines" on the show and hope that doesn't continue on a tour (though I won't go to find out). heck, if you're going for modernizing the lyric then go all the way to "airport lounges and half-charged tablets."

As for the writers, Mulaney, Seth Meyers and Paula Pell were among the heavy hitters known to have been involved between the live special and the skits during the concert.
Did not realize the concert had skits too.

Paula Pell voices the main character in Dream Productions, a Disney Plus mini-series that is a spinoff from the Inside Out franchise. A funny sendup of moviemaking/TV production that has some fingerprints of behind-the-scenes SNL. I dig the score too, which has sort of a jazzy 70s talk show vibe.

Bill Murray as his lounge singer with Paul Shaffer, Gasteyer/Rudolph/Strong, and Ferrell/Gasteyer as the Culps (uncensored).

That's my hope b/c he looked as old as he sounded. It was also 11:15 by the time McCartney hit the stage! Poor guy probably wanted to go to bed.

re: Weird sketch order, James Andrew Miller was on Simmons' podcast and said they didn't have a dress rehearsal for SNL 50, unlike a normal show. That probably contributed to the show feeling extra baggy in some spots. There wasn't a ton of other revelations from that pod though - No definitive answer for why Hader and Aykroyd weren't there, why Conan wasn't used at all, etc.

I don't think there's any issues with Hader being frozen out. Otherwise, there wouldn't have been a VW commercial made with him based off the Californians, and Hader was pretty heavily involved with a lot of the documentary content on Peacock.

Good points, my bad.

One giant absence that struck me last night (couldn't have been that big if it took me 24 hours to think of it): Wayne's World. Make me wonder if Dana Carvey had some health issues b/c he was all over the show pre-election.

Well, one of two ain't bad.

If hosting and being the musical act counts, Gaga will be joining the five-timer club.

I am familiar with and enjoy the work of both the host and musical guest on March 8. The folks on March 1? I'm not sure who either of them are. (Yes, I'm probably no longer the target demographic of SNL.)

But I did watch the anniversary special; am halfway through the concert special; and have watched two behind-the-scenes episodes (Five Minutes and More Cowbell) and have thoroughly enjoyed them all.

Apparently Carvey had the flu.

Wayne's World got old for me in its original run. Wasn't missed.

I can't imagine the challenge it must have been to not only play the hits, but just the sheer logistics of trying to squeeze in as many cast members as possible.

Pamela Stephenson got hosed.

SHOCKING we disagree here, you big jerk! :D I loved Wayne's World thru the movie, but in classic modern SNL style, they killed the golden goose by making the sequel barely a year later. There wasn't much there there. But the skits leading up to the movie and the movie itself were all fantastic.
