It's better than Old School...

Very, very funny movie, but it is no Old School.

Old School is ok, nothing more. Superbad, Wedding Crashers and Anchorman were far more enjoyable. Road Trip is below those three, but ahead of Old School.

I like all of the movies you mentioned here. I love one or two of them. Old School is the best of the bunch. And, to me, it really isn't that close.

EDIT: Whoa. Just noticed you said Road Trip is better than Old School? Road Trip? Now I KNOW you're on crack ;)

Ferrill's character in Old School is like the one in Talladega Nights, Step Brothers, that figure skating movie. He'll run around semi-naked, yell and scream, make a few deck jokes. Who forking cares?

What do you want him to do, Shakespeare?

Funny is funny. So, yeah, I care.
Step Brothers was a piece of ship. Never saw Semi Pro, because I'm guessing it was just like Talladega Nights, and said figure skating flick.

What do I want him to do? I dunno. Maybe not make the same movie six times in a row. That'd be a start.

Stepbrothers was forking awesome. So many funny lines. So I don't really know what to make of this post. Does not compute.

Step Brothers was two hours of forced awkwardness. Will Ferrell trying too hard to be funny.

Will Ferrell was at his finest when he was doing something new. That's why Anchorman and Old School were great.

But now he just acts like a retard and runs around in his underwear. Or says the word balls. The underwear bit was funny once. Not anymore. The concept of a 40-year-old man acting like a 12-year-old has been played out. He's done it like 10 times now. Okay, we get it. WE GET IT.

Superbad works because it is teenagers being dumbashes. It's Dazed and Confused meets the new millennium. I expect 18-year olds to say balls, talk about boobs, and get in trouble for boozing on the weekends. It's funny. But not when Will Ferrell does it because before Step Brothers, I've seen Will Ferrell act like a 13-year old at least five other times.

-Anchorman
-Old School
-Kicking and Screaming
-Semi-Pro
-The Dumb Ice Skating Flick
-Elf - yes, Elf counts.

I kind of disagree with that. Will Ferrell acted like a 12-year-old in Stepbrothers because that was the point of the movie.

He acted like a child in Elf because that was the point.

I disagree with the ashertion that he acted like a 12-year-old in those other movies. In Old School, he acted like a man in the middle of a mid-life crisis. To me, it's the most relatable character he's ever done. "Once it hits your lips, it's so good" -- I totally relate to that.

In Anchorman, he acted like a 40-year-old man with an inflated sense of self-importance.

In Talledega Nights, he acted like a dumbash redneck. Not a 12-year-old.

Kicking and Screaming spoofed overzealous soccer parents. It did not spoof 12-year-olds.

I'm not saying the guy is Laurence Olivier. I just don't believe his movies all his movies are "a 40-year-old man acting 12."

Ferrell has said before that most of his movie characters (Ron Burgundy, Jackie Moon, Chazz Michaels) are an off-shoot of his George W. Bush character ... a man with a needlessly inflated self-esteem. Morons who only think they are the smartest man in the room.
Razor take there, SG

Well, sadly for Ferrel then, his 12-year-old character, dumb redneck character and ELF character are the same as his 40-year-old Anchorman character.

It's the same schtick. Every character is the same way in the fact that Ferrel is going to act like a child in some sense of the movie.

In Talladega Nights - He ran around screaming saying "save me baby jesus."
In step brothers he was a pure retard. The movie was incredibly over the top, the plot was solid, but the execution was not there, they could have been so much more funny. Cal Naughton Jr. -- whatever his real name is... is not funny. Sorry.

I guess my main beef with Ferrel is step brothers. If they would have made that movie 15 years ago with Chris Farley and David Spade it would have been 10x funnier.

To quote the man himself in Anchorman, when arguing about whether or not "San Diego" is indeed German for "a whale's vagina:" Agree to Disagree.

And ... let me get this straight ... you're complaining about one-note acting on one hand ... and then clamoring for Farley and Spade on the other?

I'm as big a Farley fan as there is/was ... but you can't tell me he didn't play the same character in every movie, too. Tommy Boy, Tommy Boy II, Tommy Boy Goes West in the 1800s.

Farley had a few more clubs in his bag.

Honestly, if Ferrell can do one (1) comedy where he manages to keep his shirt and pants on and his voice at a normal pitch, he might have a chance of winning over some of his critics.

I don't think he really cares. Seems to be doing OK for himself.

Did he really run around nude in Anchorman? Because I don't remember that part.

I haven't seen The Hangover yet, but so many people thought Wedding Crashers was great?? I thought the first 45 minutes were hilarious but after that it really dropped off.

There are hundreds of chopless actors in Hollywood who are doing more than OK for themselves. Brittney Spears is doing OK for herself.

And that's all fine, but being taken seriously is another matter.

I'm pretty sure "being taken seriously" is the last thing a comedian wants.

IMHO, the second half of the movie fares much better on repeat views.

Zach what's his name was out-forking-standing. Love that guy ever since he played Alan Finger in the short-lived Dog Bites Man on Comedy Central. The only thing missing in The Hangover was an "Up in them guts" reference.

Oh man, I forgot that was him. Up In Them Guts was awesome.

I have seen it three or four times and it is still not as good as the first part.
