The Inevitable Mitt Romney Tour Running Thread

I can't believe anyone thinks a radio personality is "raving" about a sponsor on his show completely on his own. You think that's legitimate? He may well use the product, but he ain't paying for it, and he ain't saying nice things about it out of the goodness of his heart.

I'd say nice things about a mattress company too, if they were giving me a mattress every six months. Don't believe me? See how many times he mentions his now-former advertisers.

I understand what you are saying. But, there's a reason these companies pay for a personal endorsement -- because they work.

And, maybe he's full of shirt, but he sounds authentic when talking about these companies. And, that's what matters.

The only thing that would hurt Rush is if affiliates start dropping his show.

I remember a few years back when it blew up at The Masters over female membership and sponsors took a few years off.

It blew over and they are all back. Imus is back also.

A lot of people think there are 500 advertisers lined up to replace anyone who leaves the EIB. Didn't work so well for Glenn Beck.

I would guess Rush could fill his show up with ads for gold dealers, work from home/multi-level marketing companies, and the such.

But, he's been pretty much alone in the industry in avoiding those types of ads. (And, those ads are one of my biggest pet peeves.)

In the mean time, we'll hear a lot more ads for his own iced tea brand.

I've actually got to think this is going to hurt his local stations almost as much. If you purchase a run of station ad on a local affiliate, you want your ad to get some play on Rush's show, which is likely the stations most popular programing.

Do you now insist they not run your ad on his show? And, if you do, is it even worth advertising on that station anymore?

A, to be sure, not-a-Limbaugh-fan who has worked at Clear Channel (and still works in the radio industry) tries to provide more explanation on the local buys:

Basically, most ads are network buys, rather than a specific show buy. So the advertisers would have to make a point of contacting the station, the network and/or the radio chain to demand that the ad not be aired during a specific show.

You're right that Limbaugh is usually a prime spot, because he airs during a high-ratings time (lunch hour) and draws decent ratings, to boot. He also has a loyal audience, though I don't know personally if that loyalty extends to support his advertisers (actually, I would guess his hardest core is more supportive of the advertisers who remain).

In a little more than a half-hour, we'll know how hard Rush is taking the Dear John letter.

Doubt he'll go out of his way to take it too hard. McCain's running out the clock, and can take full shots as he likes, now.

This weeks New Yorker cover. One of the best ever.

Too bad the cartoon was cropped before made into the cover; I'm sure the cartoonist made it as true-to-life as possible by showing some Santorum-brown ooze flowing down the back window, right?

With AOL, it's tough to tell whether that's a cover for cutting its budget.

Anyway, I expected El Rushbo to keep forking that chicken, and he didn't let me down. He "apologized" again, but basically said Fluke and her like existed merely to force people to give up their religious freedoms as part of a conspiratorial agenda with the Obama administration, and that it was all a mindfork to get Limbaugh down to "their level" -- their being the Leftists -- by drawing him into name-calling, which he NEVER does. (Do I need blue font for that clause?)

Thing is, the consensus from what I've read is this whole thing has hurt Republican candidates far more than Dems by training even more focus on denying women's health (rather than the trickier, but defensible, question of religious freedom). It's unfortunate for Mittens that this happened in March instead of August, so he could have had a possible Sister Souljah moment by telling off Limbaugh. But Mittens can't bring himself to do it now because of the very real fear he'll lose primary voters.

Of course, the Sister Souljah moment works better when it's some fring character, not one of the biggest (no pun intended) radio personalities of the last 25 years, one who has served as an unofficial kingmaker and kingbreaker for your party.

Dog shirt jokes are low hanging fruit, I admit!

Anyway, can I suggest we let old-fat-drug-using-childless-multi=married dogs lay and forego Limbaugh talk on this useful and somewhat friendly thread please?
