Week 1 College Football Thread: Seven Years of College Station Down the Drain

Clemson-Georgia in the dome makes zero sense.
Sanford Stadium holds 20,000 more.

They've been doing that kickoff game for what, fifteen, twenty years now?

This is Dragoncon weekend. Think San Diego ComicCon. It's huge, takes over five hotels in downtown Atlanta Th-M. There will be 50-60k geeks and nerds running wild on Peachtree, and their intersection with fans who come in for the game are generally hilarious to watch. Drunk Clemson or 'Bama fans plus a high percentage of people in cosplay, particularly the cute girls in spandex, equals good people watching. This is an every year ritual, only the teams change.

I remember a year where the con, the game, plus Georgia Tech's home opener, a huge LGBT convention, and a Salvation Army convention were all happening on the same weekend. There were whole a bunch of people staring at other people with their mouths hanging open.

Atlanta also this weekend hosts the Tour Championship finale at East Lake.

Parking Wed-Fri is at the GWCC lots. Weekend parking is at some lot over by old Turner Field. Probably will be a few confused or upset golf fans driving to the dome Saturday or Sunday.

And it's going to be hotter than the devil's taint this weekend.

I was there for the 2013 Virginia Tech-Alabama game at the old Georgia Dome, which was on the same weekend as Dragoncon. It was a weird, wild scene.

That's what's fun. Bama and Georgia fans may have gotten a bit used to it, but generally at least one fan base is blindsided by con madness. Add that all the restaurants in the immediate area are packed, and that often fans are in one of the con hotels. There are generally parties 24/7, which might be a good or a bad thing for visiting football fans. For certain check in and check out is a complete zoo during the con.

I am kind of surprised the Georgia game is a nooner. I have to think there's significant overlap between Bulldog boosters and primo Tour Championship ticket holders.

It's an SEC orgy for the Mouse as it takes over all of the SEC.
