Running 2023-24 Hot Stove Thread

She's his mirror image.

And Vince Coleman has long been on the short list of all-time bad--and dumb--guys. In addition to not knowing who Jackie Robinson is, there's a part in "The Worst Team Money Could Buy" where he's playing craps in the clubhouse and yells he needs a six. "C'mon six C-I-X!"

Everybody knows promotional items are usually for the worst games.

There's a reason why when the Yankees visit there's never a giveaway. You do it against the A's on a Monday night

Also, there's a special place in heck for the person who invented dynamic pricing
I've never understood why the Blue Jays do their big promo days - bobbleheads etc. - on weekends, those are not games where they need to worry about crowds, as you say it's a Monday night against the A's.

I read that book a long time ago and remember that era well. Imagine that stuff occurring in today's online media environment.

I still remember the NY Post's coverage of David Cone's "behavior" in the bullpen and an incredible Page Six cartoon showing Cone with his back to the reader, his pants down, his hands not seen, and everyone in the dugout and stands looking incredulous as the manager yells for him to "stop warming up".

And among the fans in the stands was Mike Tyson, who was dealing with his rape case, Ted Kennedy, Kennedy's nephew who was on trial for some sort of sexual misconduct and Bill Clinton.

This is why Orioles fans are all goose-bumpy about going 1-2 with Burnes and Bradish.

Yeah, Cone and Gooden built up a lot of goodwill with their mound excellence (and have continued doing so, Cone via his excellent broadcasting work and Gooden via his vulnerability and attempts to stay sober), but there's little doubt they did some bad shirt too in that era. Cone struck out 19 Phillies hours after he was told he was being investigated for rape. And I didn't realize/remember until now that Cone's girlfriend was the one who accused Coleman, Gooden & Daryl Boston of gang rape.

That's a helluva lot better than the old Comisky in the South Side, boy was that a trek from downtown.
As the crow flies, it's not that far — maybe 3 or 4 miles.

But time and traffic wise, trying to drive through the Kennedy, Stevenson and Dan Ryan "spaghetti bowl" of merger ramps and backups, good luck. Especially for a 7:05 game.

It was actually easier to get to old (and new) Comiskey by getting off I-55 early and taking the local streets from the west. That reminded true when we went to a Sox game in the summer of 2022.
