2023-24 CFB coaching carousel

OK - I understand the portal opens for a month when a coach leaves, but given the head start other teams had - are there that many openings for players? Maybe they reset the portal date to Feb. 1? Figure the coaching moves are done (even those moving to the NFL), players would be allowed to finish their current term if they wish - or leave to participate in spring football. Figure also the late signing day for HS players is around then. And then open it back up after spring ball for players who don't like where they landed on the depth chart for a week or two.
Solves a lot of problems with the bowls, the coaching vacancies etc. Does the NCAA even have any control over college football anymore?
Check this 2022 list, just for QBs, and I think you'll have your answer on if there are enough openings. (Incidentally, the Heisman winner was ranked 106th overall in the portal availables.)

That is:

a) amazing;
b) ridiculous;
c) the future of CFB;
d) all of the above.

Just don't tell me any of them are there for an education. (Maybe the lacrosse player.)

D. And anyone that tells you otherwise is absolutely lying to you.

These G5 head coaches are essentially saying, "My only chance to move from this job to a power conference head coaching gig was to find diamonds in the rough, coach them up, beat a power conference team in a body bag game and use the moment to preen. Well, now the big boys will steal my diamonds in the rough after a year. So I'm stuck in this backwater. I'll take an assistant's job with the big boys and go the coordinator route the next time."

Welcome to the English Football League.

With most college teams - the head strength coach IS the defacto Head Coach in the off-season with winter conditioning. Players spend more time with that coach than anyone.
