2025-26 College basketball coaching carousel

Self retiring is a shock because of his contract. He signed a rolling five-year, 53 million deal starting with 23-24 and there's a $5 million bonus if he gets through the first five years of it. Self retiring for not wanting to deal with the new way of basketball would not be shocking.

Pitino doing anything is not shocking

None of these would be as shocking as the Calipari move, but they'd unleash a similar chain reaction of random firings and lateral moves. Of course, Calipari was the last domino to fall in last season's cycle, which began with SMU firing Rob Lanier, replacing him with USC's Andy Enfield and USC hiring Eric Musselman away from Arkansas. So the cycle may begin in innocuous fashion.

Miami going after Jai Lucas, son of John and a Duke assistant. Or so sayeth the Mouse.

Damn, I expected to see them at like 2-24 or something. But they're 15-12? Can't see that meriting immediate dismissal with a couple of weeks left in the season.

Edit to add that they won 22 games last season? That is forked up.

Didn't make the tourney though so he's a looooser.

Didn't realize until just now that Utah hasn't made the tournament since 2016 and has gotten to the second weekend just once since Majerus exited. Who could have imagined going to the Pac 12 (and then the Big 12) would make it harder to make the NCAA Tournament?!

Forgot to mention a potential big domino...I won't be surprised at all if Steve Pikiell leaves Rutgers. His AD just left and it's a poorly kept secret that the next AD will be approved by meathead football coach Greg Schiano, which will bring an end to Rutgers' mini-resurgence as a basketball school. Rutgers may not even make the Big 10 tournament with two top-5 NBA draft picks. Pikiell built that program out of ashes and is still young enough to make another move to a power school.

Sounds like there's something else going on.

GW women's coach Caroline McCombs steps down amid her fourth middling season in Foggy Bottom. Revs used to be a mid-major powerhouse under Joe McKeown (three Sweet 16s and an Elite Eight) but haven't been to the tournament in seven years and haven't won a tournament game in 17 years (McKeown's last season before he left for Northwestern).

Reading between the lines, it seems as if the Utah boosters weren't going to start ponying up to improve what reportedly is a pretty grim NIL situation with Smith at the helm, and BYU is eating their lunch in that department (and in the on-court results department).
