I'm sure everyone in the South and some apologists here would have had measured responses had Bama been left out.
Potential stupidity doesn't excuse actual stupidity.

What if FSU had just said their QB1 was questionable/day-to-day after his injury and kept everything hush-hush until after the committee picked the 4 teams?
Liberty-Oregon in Fiesta.
But you wouldn't have predicted a season like this one, in which there were more 12-1 or 13-0 Power 5s than in any other.A year or so ago I said something to the effect of "When they leave an undefeated P5 conference champ out I'll eat my forking hat" ... better go preheat the oven.

The bars in Arizona will do land-office business, Liberty fans will be drinking like fishes since they're out of Lynchburg. They just like the idea of putting the Flames in a bowl whose logo has flames in it. The idea is such ... fire ... or however the kids put it these days ...
Everything would have been the same EXCEPT there'd be little to no evidence as to the consequentiality of his absence. What if he'd broken his leg scoring the go-ahead TD in the championship game?

If Bama beats Georgia, and Washington, Florida State and Texas all win out, I think (gulp!) the SEC has to be left out. Texas will have beaten the SEC champ head-to-head on the road.
That's absolutely true. And while this one is not as egregious as the others, since they did deserve to be in the conversation, this is also at least the third time I can recall where Alabama weaseled its way into a playoff/BCS championship opportunity. They didn't win the SEC West in 2011 or 2017, but got a spot both times . . .
. . . and went on to win the national title.
It's kinda surprising something akin to this hasn't happened more frequently. There were three 13-0 P5ers in 2019, and Oklahoma was the only other one-loss team of note. But you wouldn't have predicted a season like this one, in which there were more 12-1 or 13-0 Power 5s than in any other.
