Help me out - what does the "podunk town"-Vegas thing mean?

I first remember hearing it was in the late 90s in reference to Greenville, N.C.

At that time people called it G-Vegas, and I always understood that to be because it was the party town in an otherwise vast expanse of no nightlife down east.

Somewhere along the way it seemed to morph to add the Vegas to any sleepy town with a "ville" in its name as a bit of irony.

They still try to use it. Cannot imagine anything happening there or in Starkville that compares to Vegas.

I've heard my hometown referred to as Nashvegas for at least 30 years.

Like was noted earlier, I think the city needs to be a -vile for proper flow.

Also, Fontucky and Ventucky are slang for Fontana and Ventura here in SoCal.

I've seen a lot of lower income towns have -tucky added to the end.

Comparing Fontana to Kentucky seems awfully unfair to Kentucky.

Here in Virginia, we have Farmvegas, home of Hampden-Sydney and Longwood.

I don't much get it either - I think it is used ironically as in "it ain't Vegas" but I could be way way off.

Like attaching "gate" to every scandal real or imagined, I think it is overused.

I have heard that when you are traveling to Vegas you have pretty much nothingness on the highway then out of nowhere is this huge patch of life. This was probably in the 1960s and 1970s.

Towns that have tons of shit off the highway when you have miles and miles of nothing on the highway is what I thought the -Vegas names come from.
