MLB 2025 Spring Training Thread

There are reports that Gerrit Cole has already been told he needs Tommy John surgery. He is seeking a second opinion. The Yankees already lost Gil for a significant chunk of the season, so their rotation is suddenly very shaky.

Maybe Cease ends up in New York?

Don't worry, Yankees have Carlos Carrasco.

There was a certain beauty last season in watching him fling 86 mph slop, trying to knick the corner of the strike zone over and over again, like an elderly polar bear walking over a thinning ice bridge near a 100-foot crevashe and somehow always emerging after four and one-third innings having given up three runs.

I liked Carlos Carrasco as a Met. He just couldn't stay healthy. Had a good 2022 season but I imagine that was the best he had left.

I was stunned when he signed with the Yankees. He never wanted to leave Cleveland, so I figured going back there last season off a rough final year with the Mets season was a chance to go out on his terms in a city and organization he loves. I really thought he was done when they released him before the end of the season and brought him back to throw a first pitch before a playoff game. But hey, if I had the skills to throw a baseball in the 90s, I'd keep looking for opportunities until all the doors were shut, too.

If Baltimore is all in, Alcantara should be throwing for them on opening day. Especially because the Yanks are sniffing around him.

I don't think the bullpen is a problem right now with Bautista back. But they have to upgrade that rotation.

My guess is the Yankees aren't sniffing around him as much as you might think. Cashman, with eternal job security, made his moves and Cole's injury provides him his Ned Flanders' parents moment. "I've tried nothing and I'm all out of ideas, man."
