"Babies" is cliche these days. I just came from Trenton, where "leaders" are calling everyone "babies" because they need to be taught.

I apologize if it was a miswording, but I think it still gets the point across.

LaPierre prayed on the most basic emotions any parent might have about their defenseless "babies". That's why I said he planted seeds.

Xan, your interpretation of this is so far off base it's difficult to even discuss it, but LaPierre did not win hearts and minds yesterday.

We'll see.

For the record, I disagree with what LaPierre said. But you can't deny that his message will resonate with a lot of people, and there *will* be a massive national argument about putting armed guards in schools. Take that one to the bank.

There will not. Talk to any group of parents in any school and what you will hear is that it is absolute lunacy.

There are a lot of schools in New Mexico that already have an armed police officer on campus. The idea isn't as outlandish as some of you might think. I'm don't think the idea is really a solution to any of this, but don't act like it can't become a big part of the national discussion.

Quite a different situation from having a (probably) off-duty police officer on hand and having a bunch of poorly trained militia wannabes waving their guns around on campus.

I have not heard of any armed guard stories, yet. BUT...I have heard a school receive a donation to have a security officer patrol the grounds, I've seen an off-duty marine patrolling his daughter's elementary school on the news and have heard tales of parents of kids in day care pooling money to hire a security guard. This all in the last 48 hours.

One tiny sample but still ...

NJ.com (the state's largest paper, one of the nation's biggest dailies) asked the question and the results so far are this: 54-41

http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2012/12/poll_nra_wants_armed_guards_in.html

I'd be a little more willing to agree with LTL and others if the results were 88-7 or whatever but this is what I'm saying about planting seeds and seeing how they either sprout of fizzle out. 54-41 is not exactly fizzling out.

Yeah, there was that discharged Marine near Modesto who lied about going to Iraq and Afghanistan. Kind of tough to do after he was discharged after nine months.

After yesterday's LaPierre shirt-show, Biden should make a big show of announcing the NRA will NOT be consulted in any prospective courses of action.

Of course any actions eventually taken will have to be approved by a lot of people who DO listen very attentively to what the NRA has to say (not to mention ALEC which also runs interference for them).

But Biden's official task force should brush them off like pigeon shirt.
