Why take the safety off the board?

I assume it's because of the chance to avoid anything wrong in the final 30 seconds -- injury, miracle comeback, whatevs.

I can also assume there are a whole lot of people losing their shirt right now because they had 49ers minus 7 or 7 1/2.

Yup, you're right. I thought the line was a lot closer than that, but looks like it closed at 7.5.

Wowzer.

Might have cost betting interests worldwide a couple hundred million.

There can't be anything quite as bogus as comparing passing percentages from previous eras to those of today. Given today's rules and ball, Sammy Baugh might've averaged over 90 percent completions for his career.

This is why stories need editors. What a ridiculous premise.

shockey, we get it. roger's your boy.

but he sucks as a commish.

well, you're half-right, longtime. roger's my boy, alright. for that i am blessed.

but he does NOT suck as a commish.... is he infallable? of course not. but he is intent on making the nfl a safer place by the time his reign ends (in 10-20 years or so) and he's sccomplshed that, although he's not through. when your heart's in the right place your work is NEVER done. 8) ;) ;) 8)

Mouthing platitudes about player safety while whoring around for an 18-game season is base hypocrisy. Nothing's changed about that.

Wow. I finally met someone other than Peter King willing to shill for that wart.

18 game sched and a full slate of Thursday night games contradicts that

His heart is about the money. He needs to say he cares about player safety due to the lawsuits. Plus keeping people like Tom Brady healthy using bullshirt rules means more money. All he does is about driving up profits.

Player safety = defense against lawsuit, keeping stars healthy
18-game schedule = more revenue
Crackdown on players off field = helps clean up the leagues image and make it appeal to families more

Exactly. For every step forward he takes in protecting the safety of the NFL players, he takes two steps back with his greedy plans to put them at an even greater risk.

Wake me when he starts punishing teams for failing to properly manage concussions. Then he can talk about player safety. Maybe.

this bashing of roger is oh amusing-so; y'all overrate his power by a million miles. the 32 egomaniacal multi-millionairres he works for call all the shots and pull all the strings when it comes down to the matter of $$$ and how to make more of it. the more mundane matters like player safety and maintaining the league's image are left more to him and his henchmen. often the two sides have their own tug of war. don't you see? of course these matters reek of hypocrisy. you don't think he sees how their vantage points are often contradictory? this isnt a juggling act easily kept in balance. it's all much more complex and political than any of us can imagine. i'm certainly no brainiac when it comes to many of the issues roger faces.

the commissioners primary job, in my eyes, is to babysit for and pacify the owner as best he can while also trying to bring as much of his standards of morality and righteouness to the table, too. in all likelihood it's an impossible dream. the twins shall never meet. i, for one, am at least comforted knowing that the guy behind the big desk hasn't given up hope that they can. he's his father's son, after all.

i best take my lead from roger and 'recuse myself' from goodell-related posts. but it's difficult; i confess to having a weakness for coming to my friend's defense, even against the posts offered by anonymous strangers. this is a character flaw i battle every day -- to no avail, obviously. i'm trying to do better.

I respect your defense of your friend. In your place, I'd be doing the same.

That said, I do believe your friendship is blinding you to reality in this case.

His job is do what is best for the league in the sense of making the most money. Every action he does eventually falls back to what will make the league most profitable. It's neither right or wrong. It's simply his job as commissioner.
