Evangelical Christianity is the root of the evil running the country. In 2015, Trump won the support of Falwell and Liberty University. Without it, he wouldn't have had a political career.

Not sure Evangelical Christianity is the "cause" - any more than the border hawks, who typically supported whomever was the GOP nominee. Like many "blocs" of the GOP, they fell in line after Trump became the front-runner (largely due to the impact of an influx of new voters without long histories in the GOP, and people disaffected by the GOP establishment). Early on the Christian right backed Rick Santorum and Huckabee.
Even now, when you look at the Evangelical "leaders" who Trump surrounds himself with, they are more likely to be "prosperity gospel" windbags and various megachurch pastors, rather than leading figures within the Evangelical establishment.
