Running Shooting Thread 2024

Do we need to start a running stabbed thread? But, seriously, what the heck is going on?

The Sydney attacks, at present, seem to be very different. The Westfield attacker was seriously mentally ill and seems to have had a problem with women. The church attack is being investigated as terrorism, with the vigilante angle adding an additional awful layer. It's been a rough week here, for sure. And still, I can't help but fall back on how much worse it would be if guns had been involved.

Obviously, lots of Columbine 25 stories out here today ahead of the anniversary. I'm going to try to stop by the memorial tomorrow.

This time of year is tough for anniversaries. Waco, OKC, Columbine ....

The West, Texas fertilizer explosion happened 11 years ago April 17, 2013. The blast registered as a 2.1 magnitude and was heard as far north as the southern suburbs of Dallas.

Today is 25 years since Columbine. There was a small vigil last night at the memorial. I might go by there today, but it's snowing here.

Lots of remembrance stories today. Still sobering that of all the school shootings and other mass shootings, even here in Colorado (Aurora, Boulder), just the word Columbine triggers an immediacy about it.

I wasn't there but I have friends who were students there at the time. And I've worked many games there and you go through the cafeteria area to get to the gym. Always a sad day here. And every day for the families.

All I can say about the Columbine anniversary is that I can't even fathom in the time since, there have been worse shootings, higher death tolls and extremely little has been done by legislators in reaction to them. Vegas, Sandy Hook and Uvalde, just to name three. And people wonder why younger generations have such a dim outlook on their futures.
