The worst pop song ever

Eight pages of sports writers and no one's mentioned this song? I swear, it gives me 'Nam like flashbacks to covering Little League a decade ago...

I hate "Talkin' Baseball" by Terry Cashman - yeah, I said it. Even worse were the local knockoffs he made for various teams.

There is definitely men of a certain age vibe going on this thread so I’m breaking out something modern.

For awhile, she and Katy Perry seemed to be in a race to make the most annoying sounds on a song…but the “oh awoah oh” is still the worst.

(whispers)

This and “Timber” are songs I secretly liked but refused to ever admit or show outward signs to liking. Super dumb pop songs but it’s all she ever presented them as. I respected that.

Most pop music isn’t made to be more than lighthearted fun in the moment. And most of the songs that try to be Substantial and Important really suffer for the effort.

My brain oscillates so wildly (if you can’t tell from my posting styles) from self-seriousness to youthful absurdity that I prefer a good 1:1 mix.

Basically everything on AM radio from 1974-1977 with a few exceptions, but if you want to lose your dinner ...

"Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast" -- Wayne Newton
"(You're) Having My Baby" -- Paul Anka ...

I forgive Paul Anka somewhat for putting John Prine and Steve Goodman on the road to stardom.

While this would make a tremendous ringtone, it's an awful, awful song.

"Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast" -- Wayne Newton
"(You're) Having My Baby" -- Paul Anka
"Playground In My Mind" -- Clint Holmes
"MacArthur Park" -- all versions
"The Candyman" -- Sammy Davis Jr.
"Don't Give Up On Us" -- David Soul
"You Light Up My Life" -- Debbie Boone
"Alone Again (Naturally)" -- Gilbert O'Sullivan
"Muskrat Love" -- Captain and Tenille
"Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" -- Rupert Holmes
"Undercover Angel" -- Alan O'Day
"Tonight's The Night" -- Rod Stewart

Novelty songs and Red Sovine are in their own category.

"The Candyman" was No. 1 when my journalism career started (my first paper route, June 1972). So I've always had a soft spot for that song.

That holds true for a lot of things from my childhood. If hearing it makes me think of what I was doing when I first heard it, it's hard for me to hate it.

Here's a song that I hate to admit I like, and it's for the same reason -- I remember hearing it (a lot) on the radio at the trading post at Boy Scout summer camp:
