It's been 6-7 years since I've been on the board. Not sure why, but seems like a good time to revisit.

Just to clarify, I think it's safe to assume that by "action plan", the family is referring to a 504 plan. It's often referred as an "action" plan, between the teacher (or special education / 504 plan coordinator) and family.

While I used to be a college administrator, I took an early retirement 15 years ago (in my late 40s) & became an elementary school teacher. I've spent that entire time frame, in a Title 1 building.

Kids haven't changed. Not really. Same issues there were in the 60s & 70s, when I was in school, dressed up in different packaging. Kids are definitely not the major problem. There are outliers, of course. This youngster, for example. Now parents, politicians & self declared experts? The folks determined to dismantle public education in the country? That's where you need to start looking, if you want to diagnose the problem. IMHO, of course.

If the parents had a kid with these types of issues and they just left a gun sitting around.

You are, of course, correct. It's semantics, as well. I'm just going on how we've handled these type of issues ("these type of issues" doing a LOT of heavy lifting there) in our building. As a Title 1 building, we see a lot. It's also a matter of determining / defining if the behavior is the result of the identified disability. Which is why the school psychologist is usually involved.

I hear you. I just think it is important to know what sort of action plan they are talking about to help understand just how badly the administration screwed up by not taking action sooner.
