My wife always wanted me to wear jorts. She'd buy them and then I'd return them.

I have no idea how wide this trend was, but for about six months in the mid-'80s, everyone at my high school wore cycling shorts. Like, black lycra shorts. I don't know how to say this without getting gross about it, but there were dances that must have set records for the most teenage moose knuckle per square foot.

Also, I proudly wore jorts, complete with an extraordinarily long leather braided belt.

Was it just us? I've really wondered since whether it was a very localized, very stupid fashion trend. I've never heard anybody else talk about their cycling shorts days.

I don't remember exactly, but I think the rat tail more coincided with my Jams and Shark Watch phase. Mainly because my parents wouldn't let me grow it until after the school year was over.
