Western Virginia recommenation

Screw it. I'm going to fix up my car and drive the Shenandoah Valley and central Virginia. I would like to go to SW Virginia, but I don't know it and it is a heck out of the way.

If you like wine, we did the Monticello wine trail about five years ago. There are 40 wineries within 25 miles of Charlottesville, and you pass down some fascinating, old-school back roads. Added bonus is having a big college town right there for night-time entertainment/dining/etc.

I tried direct message, but it said I was blocked. My cousin's son wants to fly helicopters. He is ROTC at am engineering school. Anything to recommend?

Hmm. Not sure why you're blocked. I'll try to look at the settings and figure it out.

If he's in ROTC, the process is fairly simple. Make good grades, do well on evaluations at Cadet Summer Training during the summer following his junior year, and score high on his physical fitness tests. Grades make up the largest portion of the ranking system that leads to branch selections.

He'll also need to take and score well on the SIFT, the selection test used to select aviators. I'm pretty sure he'll have to have a Class 1 flight physical.

Thanks. The whole thing seems so daunting. Spending Saturday morning out in the woods, constant PT drills, and he plays club hockey.

When I lived in the Commonwealth and they SoCon mates, I always thought you'd have to be crazy to go to VMI or The Citadel. Their plebe year is much more abusive than the service academies.

The corps would come to Richmond for a football game and it was like they got let out of jail. Reading Conroy's books about The Citadel did nothing to change my mind. But a high school friend (Navy family) had two sons attend VMI and they loved it.

Covered quite a bit of VMI hoops when they were in the Big South. The topic of the Rat Line came up often, and how their freshmen would be having really good seasons until they had to go through it. Tough scene.
