They're going to pay him and it makes no sense. They did the exact same thing with arod. With every long term contract, there's an awareness that you need to overpay for back end years in order to get their prime years. The roy halladay contract was so unusual because he didn't make them do that and just took the short term deal for just his prime. When they opt out after the best years, you thank them for their service, wish them luck, and thank your lucky stars.
This is not what smart teams do.
