Complete hypothetical: the Chiefs are the type of NFL job Harbaugh would consider -- a team that can win right now. He's not going to walk away from literal nirvana in his college job to have to shovel shirt with a dumpster fire like the Raiders or Bears where you're probably 3 years away from sniffing a wild card, 5 from SB contention.

For that matter, I don't think Reid has given any indication he's ready to retire, either. But he is 65.

Also, the "Harbaugh circus" is mainly the function of the NCAA's 9000 page bullshirt rule book, which is even more bullshirt now in the age of NIL; nothing Harbaugh has been involved in would be even a sneeze in the world of the NFL.

Reid and Harbaugh are of the same vintage. I just don't see that transition happening.

Thing about Reid is if he decides not to coach anymore, he'll retire and be done with it.
I don't see him chasing any more jobs.

Well, this isn't about Reid, really; I just threw him in as an example of what would be an unexpected retirement/resignation: a good job which would become available not because of on-field failures and would not require lengthy rebuilding or revamping the roster. That's the kind of job Harbaugh would be interested in.

For whatever it's worth which isn't much, Harbaugh just turned 60 while Reid turns 66 in March, so there is somewhat of an age difference.

I remember there being some conjecture Reid would retire if they won the Super Bowl last year, but I wonder if that was more to throw everyone off the scent of him being done w/Bieniemy. Anything is possible, but--and this is the nicest way to put this--Reid's pretty much made coaching his entire life at the expense of everything else in his life. What else is he gonna do? He could always have to step aside for health purposes, but he's got a top-3 QB in his prime and he's 70 wins shy of Shula. The league will surely go to 18 games sooner than later, so he could be less than six seasons from surpassing Don (and Belichick the fraud along the way ). He's probably got that in his sights.

I can understand the Vrabel decision - but only in the way that the team needs a teardown and he might not be the best coach for that kind of thing - they need a new voice in the locker room.
The interesting thing about the open HC jobs is that there are open spots at GM in four of them (Chargers, Washington, Vegas and Carolina) - and considering three of the teams have had a month head start - you would think they would have had that nailed down by now. Unless they do a tandem hire. I wouldn't give Harbaugh roster control, but I know owners are going to feel pressure to hire the HC, get "their guy" who is likely also interviewing elsewhere. - and these owners often get into a space where they want to "compete" with the other owners to get the "hot coach" - whether the hire makes sense or not.
It's always crazy to me that most college ADs have a list of three or four names and can get a decent replacement when their coach bolts to a bigger job within days. Pro teams seem to fumble around - and it has nothing to do with the Rooney Rule. Of course, every extra million a coach costs comes out of the owner's pocket. There's the rub.

Sounds like Washington's Harris has enough sense to get the talent coordinators / sharp eyes / analytics / GM in place first, then the HC.

Look no farther than Baltimore for two good reasons why. Ravens with Ozzie and his successor. And the Orioles. It took time to build a good stable of horses.
