2025-26 College basketball coaching carousel

Without question, Hot. The players' reaction when he was tossed was so over-the-top and emotional that it makes me think they all know that was the way he was going out.

As an Iowa guy, I believe it's probably for the best. Then again, I think back to when they pulled the plug on Tom Davis and remember the Alford and Lickliter days - don't want to backslide into that territory again.

Teams like Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Minnesota are going to struggle in the new environment. All value football over hoops. None are particularly attractive places for basketball recruits. None have the NIL resources in either sport to compete with better resourced teams in their conference.

Iowa wants Ben McCollum or Darian DeVries, both local coaches who would be attractive, but if Iowa doesn't fix foundational issues? They will be pining for the days of Fran McCaffery, much less Steve Alford.

Crazy Fran McCaffery is only 65 (going on 66). Been around FOREVER. Made the NCAAs with Lehigh in 1988. I wouldn't be shocked if he lands a mid-major gig in the northeast this cycle. Anyone who still acts like that at 65 has this in their blood.

LaSalle would have been a good landing spot for McCaffery but they hired the guy from Radford a couple of days ago.

With one son as an ashistant coach at Butler and another expected to be a freshman, I'm gonna guess McCaffrey heads to Indianapolis for a few years.

Agreed, thought that too. But Drexel might open up. Not sure a guy who never made the second weekend at Iowa is an upgrade over a coach who won a CAA title, but McCaffery would move the needle in a way Zack Spiker hasn't.

McCaffrey is a tough guy to deal with. Very tough.

I was there 15 years ago this very Friday when they whacked Lickliter.

Fran won a lot of games, scored a lot of points and definitely raised the level after Lickliter. Yet Iowa has still not gotten out of the first weekend since 1999. That's atrocious.

If the players cared a little more for Iowa, they could have played defense the last three years.

I hear you but also think you might be underestimating how well loved he is in Raleigh. I mean there's literally a huge mural of him in downtown Raleigh and a downtown neighborhood park named after him. He's coming off his worst season in over a decade, but his overall resume is very solid.

I honestly don't know how State fans would react. I know there'd be a joyful reaction in the Triangle's black community, where he is revered, but I don't know how well that translates over to the general fanbase.

I'd love it if NCSU would hire Moton. We've never seen him recruit at that level, but given the work he's done at NCCU, I think he could adjust.

But not only do too many of the fans want a much bigger name, but it seems as if the money behind all this is targeting Wade. Boo seems to be big on Justin Gainey.

Gainey would work just fine here.

Can't stay I'm shocked that the money is behind Wade. Case, Sloan, Valvano and Gottfried all got in trouble with the NCAA. Although the NCAA enforcement division has joined most of the federal government in the Where Are They Now? file, nobody should hire Will Wade.
