I gave up trying to explain the state and the football culture. Most of the people who condemn it the most will never set foot here, and that's a trade I'm willing to make.
Ahem... key word here being "most" :)

And if you want to see some startling stuff look up the new sex offender laws in Alabama (which he will presumably have to follow if he lives here). It's not a one-time registry and then everything's cool. You have to register now in the county where you live and any county you travel to regularly for work or school. If you go on vacation you have to give notice and register there, too. How long? Only 20 years.

In a related story, Mark Schlabach reports that tree poisoner Harvey Updyke has turned down a plea offer of 13 years in prison and a lifetime ban on attending Alabama sporting events:

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7485140/source-accused-auburn-tree-poisoner-harvey-updyke-turns-plea-offer

Even Charles Barkley (who's quoted in the story) thinks that's too severe.

I don't blame him. They're trees. Give him like a $500 fine and be done with it.

Do you know how much they cost?

The going rate at Auburn for championship symbols is $180,000.

I know they're extremely old, so they couldn't have spent that much on them.

They're a part of the school's history, and the a-hole should be punished for destroying that just because he is a fan of the rival school. Dumbass.
