College Football Week 7: Give Penn State a break (or at least a bye)

Even though his Mizzou team isn't ready for the SEC, Gary Pinkel sure is. Filed for divorce last week; he and the missus had been married 40 years and have a few grandchildren. Also the message board chatter is Gary has a nice little thing going with a 20something waitress in Columbia.

Haven't heard anything about a motorcycle.

And now the administration has two excuses to see if they can get a bigger name coach.

Mississippi State may not have any great wins, but they don't have a loss, much less a loss to a shirt team like North Carolina State.

But I think Tyler Russell is one of the more underrated quarterbacks in the country.
He's surpassed my expectations to date, but I want to see how he holds up during these pressure situations on the horizon. I'd throw in LaDarius Perkins as underrated.

Guy you really want to watch for State is Jonathan Banks. Might be the best cover corner in the country. Being projected as a Top 10 pick in the NFL Draft.

We've seen this before, team that blow all their cap money chasing one championship have a rough next couple of years.

I'm not enough of a college football historian to be sure I'm right, but he has to be amongst the worst coaches to ever win a National Championship.

Larry Coker's probably the only other person in the discussion, and he's 47 games over .500 for his career. Chizik is 36-34 (22-34 without Cam Newton as his QB).

Petrino would be perfect for Auburn. Sonny Dykes will get a look or two somewhere, Charlie Strong too for anything ACC or SEC related. Butch Jones for any openings in the Big 10 (Iowa?).
Hard to believe Mack Brown might be no. 3 (if that) in Texas behind Sumlin and Tuberville.

I guess he got his blood diamond.

This has disaster written all over it.
Florida and Alabama both win out.
Play each other in the SEC Championship Game.
Florida beats Alabama.
They both still play in the National Title Game.

Haven't we seen this movie before?

Especially when Bama dumps the conference championship, then wins the finale.

This kind of horseshirt is the worst thing about the revised format, when you have a conference which is as top-heavy dominant in FB as the SEC currently is.

Disaster scenario:

LSU beats Alabama
South Carolina beats Florida
USC beats Oregon
West Virginia beats Kansas State
Oklahoma beats Notre Dame
Oregon beats Oregon State

Your top four prior to the conference championship games could be Alabama, Florida, LSU and South Carolina, all with one loss. Alabama AND Florida could play in the BCS title game without playing in the SEC championship.

I can't see the human voters letting that happen, but it's mathematically possible.
