NFL conference championship Sunday

It depends on the team. A lot of them ( including the 49ers) use their punter to hold. Or it's a backup QB, which the 49ers are obviously out of.
I think all of them now use the punter. It's because the punter has time to work with the kicker and long snapper during practice, while the backup quarterback has other duties to perform.

One final point: Anyone else wonder if the 49ers defender was blocked into the punter? Even if not, I've seen that called the 5-yard penalty many times.

Probably doesn't matter considering the 49ers' QB situation, but still …

Time to get some things done before the AFC game starts!

Let's see, wasn't there a starting quarterback who fumbled the snap on a PAT kick that cost his team the game? Oh yeah, Tony Romo. And it wasn't that long ago.

I remember Tom Matte playing quarterback. Wasn't it in the third-place game when they had such a thing?

I do wonder why, in these win-or-go-home games, why teams don't keep their third quarterback activated? Seems too risky to just have two active in such as important game.

I loved reading about his story. He actually played multiple games at QB for the Colts that season. They needed a win to tie for the conference, and he threw a few passes and ran a bunch of draws and options to get them to win to tie the Packers.

Then he played against the Packers and the Colts almost pulled it off.

Then he played in the Playoff Bowl, when nobody gave a shirt, and threw the ball all over the field.
