NFL conference championship Sunday

So the NFL no longer has the 3QB rule, where they were inactive but could play if needed. I believe the rule was that if they entered the game before the 4th quarter, the other 2 were done for the day. So some teams no longer carry a third QB.

I get that Josh Johnson is a good guy, loved in the room, an extra coach etc. However, there had to be less terrible options available over the course of the season.

So if you are the 49ers - how do you even evaluate where you are at the QB position - figure Garrapolo walks (if he can do so without getting hurt), but then you wait and see and Purdy and Lance battle it out in training camp - and you hope to hear offers in August?

Garappolo is gone.

Just do an open competition at camp between Lance and Purdy. I think the injury makes that an easy solution -- if Purdy was healthy there would be more pressure to hand him the gig and try to move Lance.

Like PC said, open competition. ashuming all goes well, Purdy isn't back until August/pre-season play. Meanwhile, you have a QB doing training camp getting the reps. See how Purdy is progressing, give him a chance to prove he's ready for Week 1. Also, Lance will have a fifth-year option that needs to be evaluated, was drafted No. 3 after trading up to get him. Have to at least see if he could be the guy.

Purdy's arm injury cost the Niners a chance at the game (not saying they would have won for sure, but not having someone who can throw a pash takes away any hope) and it's costing them a chance to really have the quarterback situation settled after a weird offseason last year and an awkward season after drafting Lance.

That's also ashuming Lance is on track to be back in time for training camp.
