That's why he loved that worthless POS third basemen who played foots for Michigan.

Football mentality-guy, owning the Yankees.

Sand, meet gears.

True on some level but argument is watered down by fact that the guy has won 6 World Series since he has been Yankee owner.

First two, when he was using $$$$ like a bludgeon . . . last four, with Rivera -- and that show's just about over.

Now what? Especially with idiots in command. It was great fun, but . . .

But if the object of MLB teams is to win the World Series then you would have to seem the Steinbrenner reign a success given the 6 titles.

First three interviews are Girardi, Mattingly and Pena (token minority to satisfy Selig).

It will be Girardi's job because ...

If the Yankls hire Mattingly and they suck for the next 2 years (a distinct possibility if A-Rod opts out), they would take the all-time PR hit for firing Donnie Baseball, overrated but much beloved NYY icon.

But if they suck for two years under Girardi (with Mattingly staying as bench coach), then fire Girardi and make Mattingly the manager, Yankees fans (front-running ashes that they are) are happy that they have their boy Donnie as manager.

Good logical argument, spnited, although I still think Mattingly would be the move.

I think they would make the good PR move now because they are replacing Torre. This team isn't a lock for the 2008 playoffs by any means and they don't have the pitching to make a serious run even if they do make the playoffs. They have a couple of years grace period because of the opening of the new stadium in 2009. Fans will be more tolerant of Mattingly for the next couple of years than they would of Girardi if the team isn't successful. There is nothing to say Mattingly would still be around in two years - if Girardi gets the job, my guess is there would be a different bench coach and Mattingly would be doing something else with the Yankees or another team.
