First, I don't really think it's all that imaginary in reality - box stores have closed by the bushel, restaurants (I don't even enjoy) like Applebee's and Chili's are on the slide.

That's economics much more than culture.

Sears once was what amazon is now with that catalogue. They got undercut. And if you want a big warehouse full of appliances, places will specialize.

Those restaurants got toppled by the rise of fast casual. I can get better food for less money and don't have to tip or wait. And if I want a sit down place, flat out better ones came along. Those places are neither cheap nor that good,
 
Gordon Ramsay can be a bit much at times, however, when he does his individual cooking shows, he's really entertaining.


The UK versions of Hell's Kitchen and The F Word were far better than what he does over here. Far fewer hysterics and profanity for the sake of it.
