Selection Sunday thread

Re: Countdown to Selection Sunday thread

Why does everyone assume that Michigan State is in?

They are 23rd in the RPI, but they are 9-11 against the top 100 and had a 4-10 record in road/neutral games.

Here's what I've got --

IN: Kansas State, Illnois, Purdue, Drexel, Georgia Tech, Air Force, Stanford

OUT: Old Dominion, Missouri State, Michigan State, Texas Tech, West Virginia, Arkansas, Florida State

Here's my logic. Putting in 3 from the CAA is a cop-out. It's a decent league at the top, but it's absolute crap outside of the top four. You've got to pick between Drexel and ODU, and Drexel has the better overall profile. Georgia Tech gets in -- barely -- on the strength of eight top-50 wins. The 3-10 road/neutral record is bothersome. Air Force beat Stanford and Texas Tech head-to-head, so that is a good tiebreaker. Went 7-5 against top 100 and 9-7 road/neutral record. For the final slot, the choice is between Stanford and Florida State, both of whom suffered a late season injury. It's totally a coin flip, but Stanford looked better in its loss than Florida State did, so I give it to Stanford based simply on the eye test. Plus, Stanford will be a tough first-round matchup due to their two big guys.

As for the teams left out:

Missouri State -- It was very obvious the MVC was a two-man show this year. And Missouri State went 0-5 against Creighton and Southern Illinois. That should indicate a clear separation; I just don't see how to justify a bid for them.

West Virginia -- I don't think anybody really sees them in at this point.

Texas Tech -- Went 7-9 against the top 100, lost to Air Force on a neutral court by double digits, has looked really bad too many times against good teams.

Arkansas -- Had too much ground to make up. Beating Vanderbilt twice doesn't equal an NCAA bid.

There aren't going to be any N.C. State fans among the bubble coaches. Of the conference-tournament finals today, the Wolfpack is the only team that reduce the number of at-large berths.

So you think Arkansas will make it regardless?

Good point. I guess I'm thinking Arkansas doesn't have a chance in this game, though.

Hubert Davis and me. And if a few of those old white men in that hotel room agree, I could care less about "Win One For the Hawk" Lunardi.

If you're going to kill Michigan State for 9-11 vs. top 100, then you have to kill Kansas State for 5-8 vs. top 100. KSU is 9-9 in R/N, but only three of those wins game against the top 100. I mean, winning at Rutgers and North Dakota State, that's not that hard to do.

I have a feeling that Kansas State will get in, but their profile is awful.

I don't really see what separates Missouri State and Drexel. Neither one fared well against the best teams in its league. Drexel just has some talking head mojo on its side.

Drexel has better road wins, and more of them. Only Vermont (16), VCU (15) and Davidson (16) have more R/N wins than Drexel (14).

Eh.

Drexel finished fourth in a conference that had four decent teams. If the Dragons get in, fine. It's not a travesty if they don't.

I tend to agree, but road wins against Nova, the Cuse and Creighton are going to carry a lot of weight right now. Unless they've already been x'd off.

One side effect of the upsets: the bubble teams that survive will get better seeds than they would have otherwise. 12s and 13s on Tuesday are 10s and 11s now because the bottom of the bracket has teams it wasn't expecting, like GW, New Mexico State and Wright State.

Man, Tyler Hansbrough (sp?) is a really annoying player to watch. I find myself really disliking him. And he gets every forking foul called on him ever. Plus, having to listen Dickie V. give him a proverbial blowjob is almost as annoying as his mask.

Which is why I'm thankful I'm in Jefferson-Pilot Lincoln Financial country.

This is one awesome ACC final.

STOP forkING DOING WELL, N.C. STATE.
