Re: Countdown to Selection Sunday thread
Why does everyone assume that Michigan State is in?
They are 23rd in the RPI, but they are 9-11 against the top 100 and had a 4-10 record in road/neutral games.
Here's what I've got --
IN: Kansas State, Illnois, Purdue, Drexel, Georgia Tech, Air Force, Stanford
OUT: Old Dominion, Missouri State, Michigan State, Texas Tech, West Virginia, Arkansas, Florida State
Here's my logic. Putting in 3 from the CAA is a cop-out. It's a decent league at the top, but it's absolute crap outside of the top four. You've got to pick between Drexel and ODU, and Drexel has the better overall profile. Georgia Tech gets in -- barely -- on the strength of eight top-50 wins. The 3-10 road/neutral record is bothersome. Air Force beat Stanford and Texas Tech head-to-head, so that is a good tiebreaker. Went 7-5 against top 100 and 9-7 road/neutral record. For the final slot, the choice is between Stanford and Florida State, both of whom suffered a late season injury. It's totally a coin flip, but Stanford looked better in its loss than Florida State did, so I give it to Stanford based simply on the eye test. Plus, Stanford will be a tough first-round matchup due to their two big guys.
As for the teams left out:
Missouri State -- It was very obvious the MVC was a two-man show this year. And Missouri State went 0-5 against Creighton and Southern Illinois. That should indicate a clear separation; I just don't see how to justify a bid for them.
West Virginia -- I don't think anybody really sees them in at this point.
Texas Tech -- Went 7-9 against the top 100, lost to Air Force on a neutral court by double digits, has looked really bad too many times against good teams.
Arkansas -- Had too much ground to make up. Beating Vanderbilt twice doesn't equal an NCAA bid.
